Nashville Barrel Company That Red Head 5 Year Old Cask Strength Single Barrel Indiana Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml) - Whiskey Hunt Australia Selection
Whiskey Hunt Australian Exclusive limited to 150 bottles.
Moving towards the kind of all-round intensity you get from Stagg Jr. et al, this is the ballsiest offering from WHA to date. NBCo. proprietors, Mike Hinds and James Davenport are clearly wizards when it comes to selecting sensational Bourbons. They source most of their whiskeys from an undisclosed distillery in Indiana but reject 90% of what they taste. Like other high-octane bottlings, you'll need to give this time to pick up steam, blow off the aromas of varnish and alcohol and draw out softer notes of cream sponge cake, vanilla, cinnamon, pistachio nuts, oak shavings and hints of liquorice. But the real show comes with the delivery: a hold onto your hats attack starting in a superb caramel and vanilla accented entry, followed by an enormous mid-palate and a hefty dose of American oak that sits on the tongue like glycerine. Pepper, cinnamon and nuanced rye freshness are also evident. The extraction from the wood is mouth-coating and mouth-filling, the grains are thick and rich, and the recovery boasts a buttery finale that delights with sticky date, tempered by light astringency and hints of peppermint chocolate. Big hearted and broad shouldered, it's a cracking whiskey that achieves a near perfect balance of corn sweetness, oaky depths and low-burn spirit heat, driven home by super length. Readers should note, these barrel picks typically sell for $90-$120 USD in the States, so you will be equally impressed with the value. Aged over five years before bottling at cask strength with zero chill filtration, each bottle is dipped with red wax which ties in with the custom red head stickers celebrating the music city and the deep auburn colour of the whiskey. Given its relatively modest yield - 150 bottles at 750ml - not 700ml - cask #1381 is destined to be one of the quiet highlights of the year. Selected by WHA in Nashville, Tennessee in 2022. 59.63% Alc./Vol.
More about NBCo. from breakingbourbon.com... "Nashville Barrel Company sources their whiskey from a certain Indiana distillery, so it can be easy to quickly dismiss them. But like many smaller distilleries sourcing their product, they try to add their own fingerprint to it. In the case of their bourbon, they bought the barrels at a young age and aged them in their own facilities in Nashville, Tennessee. Now I might not expect major changes to the end product given that it's a five year old bourbon aged about 300 miles from where it usually does, but results speak for themselves. The palate hits perfectly thanks to a wonderful pairing of complementary flavors, with a finish that accents it with an injection of heat. For now, Nashville Barrel Company’s bourbon is relegated to single barrel offerings at select retailers. Being a single barrel, variations will occur, but as our first taste of their bourbon, I’m really interested in seeing if their aging continues to have a positive effect on their bourbon..."
