Premium Collection from South Africa Avant-gardiste AA Badenhorst
AA Badenhorst Wines are grown, vinified and aged on the 180ha family farm in the Swartland appellation of South Africa. At the helm are cousins Hein and Adi Badenhorst, who left Constantia in 2008 to purchase the original 60ha piece of land in the Paardeberg mountain. They have been growing grapes together ever since, practicing organic farming and making wines in the "traditional" manner, avoiding modern winemaking equipment and techniques. “We make wines with immense character. (...) We are making the best wines we can.", as told by Adi, who's a much-talked figure of the Cape Winemakers Guild and founding member of the Swartland Revolution. He only ever intended to make a red and white blend, but as he got familiar with the vineyards over the years, decided each plot of land demanded its own wine.
These are all single-vineyard releases (Chenin Blanc, Grenache and Cinsault) plus a "Cape-blend" bottling inspired by the long forgotten white blends that were around before the advent of modern winemaking. They all represent great value for wines with such character, power and complexity, and it's only a matter of time until (even) more wine enthusiasts will get around them.
