1792 Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)
While there's been a series of 1792 single barrels offered globally (mostly private bottlings for clubs and retailers), it's only been recently that official releases have arrived in Australia. Weighing in at a higher than normal ABV, Barton's Single Barrel program promises a more potent, striking expression that takes the distillery profile on a different tangent. At the time of writing, no barrel codes are noted, but we got the chance to taste new stocks in early 2023. If you're in the market for a masculine, no fuss Bourbon with a nice sense of maturity, this ticks all the boxes. The palate boasts classic sweet corn, vanilla and caramel fudge notes (although it's still not as sweet as Beam or Turkey) balancing out with peppercorns, light rye spices and oak shavings. The extra body and mouthfeel deliver what you'd expect in a curated selection, making for a Bourbon on the heavier, brawnier side. Add to that a reasonable asking price, and 1792 easily competes with some of the best values on our shelves. It should be noted, these single barrels will vary from batch to batch, which is why we've compiled more than one review below. 49.3% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... the small grains are working hard and the spices are admirably restrained amid the big vanilla and toffee; stays on the toasted toffee theme and even bitters slightly towards the finale; 1792 at its most simple and undemanding. 91 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023
...Ripe fruit (peach, apricot, golden raisin) on the front of the palate, followed by layered sweet notes of caramel, butterscotch, and toffee, finishing with oak, dried vanilla, and a hint of cinnamon. Great mouthfeel. Each barrel is unique in flavor profile. There's no barrel number identified on the label, so the one you buy may vary slightly. Having said this, the barrel I reviewed was very enjoyable. 87 points - whiskyadvocate.com
Typical of a single cask, offering some of what you expect from a distillery though not necessarily all. Delicious and mouthfilling as it progresses. 90.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2022
[2016 bottling] Naturally, only top barrels from Barton are selected for inclusion in this collection. 1792 Single Barrel is surprisingly racy on the nose, with notes of caramel apples, cinnamon, and some barrel char hitting the nose first. On the tongue, the whiskey explodes with sweetness, tempering the fruit with ample baking spice, brown sugar, and some tobacco character. The finish continues the theme of sweetness, tempered with just a touch of bitter cloves to add balance, along with a warming conclusion. Nothing doing here: This is just good bourbon, plain and simple. - drinkhacker.com
