1989 Adelphi Linkwood 23 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Linkwood is another of Diageo's quiet distilleries that produces malt whiskies for blending, predominantly for the Bell's & Haig labels and has only ever been bottled as a single malt by independent bottlers. Historically, the distillery has achieved some very high ratings. This selection from Adelphi is one of only 211 bottles available, and certainly hit a sweet spot in our recent tasting.
Tasting note: Pale straw gold appearance. Sweet, curiously vegetal aroma, initially resembles roasted parsnip, turning deliciously fruity with brief aeration with pronounced poached pear and sweet spice notes. Hints of dilute honey too. A plush, creamy entry continues through to a semi sweet, concentrated and gently warming palate featuring juicy stewed pear followed by a burst of honey. Refreshing citrus peel on the finish. Excellent balance. Concludes drier, with plenty of vibrancy and length. The sweet vegetal characteristics are again suggested in the aftertaste which also releases hints of cocoa and vanilla at the fade. 48.8% Alc./Vol.
