1996 Claxton's Warehouse No.1 Ben Nevis "A Different Cut" 25 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

"A Different cut" pretty much sums up what is a marked departure from the distillery's traditional style, due to a narrower cut from the stills. These runs otherwise never make it to market but Claxton's transpired via a 'happy accident' (the barrel was diverted from the Japanese blending market; more we're not permitted to say). Aromas of mango, nectarine, pavlova and passionfruit mingle with fresh cut cedar, and the idiosyncrasies repeat in a succulent mid-palate that boasts Ben Nevis's typical depth and staying power. Some found it comparable to early '90s Bowmores. We found it reminiscent of a few very old, natural strength Juras - only this is much , much more intense, particularly towards the finish. Can't say we've ever known a Ben Nevis quite like this, and given the provenance, it's likely we never will again.
