1996 Pol Roger Vintage Champagne
This wine breaks with tradition both visually and taste wise. A new package has emerged. Gone is the classic understated white label – and in is the reworked classic black label. The flavour of this wine is also more advanced than either the 1988, 1990 or 1995 and approaches Bollinger stylistically whilst still retaining the Pol Roger nose.
Creamy mousse with very fine bead, moderate persistence. Bright deep straw colour base. The nose is pronounced with classic Pol Roger character but more accentuated in its toastiness. Strong yeast autolysis, baked bread and vegemite emerge. Full bodied, creamy style. Quite broad on the palate with hazelnut, biscuit and yeast lees emerging. Clean acid finish. Whilst it is a very good Champagne, the traditional refined style of past Pol Rogers is absent.
