Dalwhinnie Distillers Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
"Soft and sensual; the ulmo honey keeps its foot on the pedal". - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible
From the highest distillery in Scotland (at 326 metres above sea level), this particular expression has an extra twist: As with previous bottlings, it's an Oloroso-Sherry cask finished Dalwhinnie. The result references Glendronach 15 in terms of its richness, though the Sherry input is less profound. Softly scented, almost floral and honeyed with some dark chocolate too, air contact adds hints of ripe stone fruits. The palate is generous, malty, semi-sweet, plump and nicely rounded with a juicy grape-like burst followed by wood and spice notes, dried fruit and vanilla-wafer biscuit; distant peat here? Excellent balance and persistence. The honeyed-orchard fruit notes lend this to a range of dessert matches - anything from cheesecake to chocolate truffles. 43% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Superb! Deft use of plum jam and ulmo honey makes for a rich and very complex aroma...soft and sensual....I can count the number of successful double matured malts probably on both hands. There is some serious skill and understanding of this distillery at work here. 94 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2017
...Equally honeyed; in fact here the finish (oloroso this time) seems to enhance the sweetness. Out comes Manuka honey, Greek yogurt, and heavy blossom notes while the sherry itself brings in a nutty, polished note. There’s just a hint of sulfur when you add water (Dalwhinnie is a sulfury new make). The finish is long with some Brazil nut. Try frozen with dessert.
