An outstanding ‘Jimmy Watson’ trophy wine.

The Jimmy Watson Trophy was established after Jimmy Watson’s death in 1962 by friends and family. Jimmy ran one of the country’s best wine bars in Lygon Street, Carlton. The wine bar is located just one block from Melbourne University - consequently freinds had no trouble in raising funds from students, academics and business associates to finance the competition for the trophy. Over the years, the trophy awarded for the best one year old red has attracted much controversy. Historically, the big winner of the Jimmy Watson Trophy has been South Australia with over 29 awards, Victoria only winning 6 and Western Australia and New South Wales on only two occasions. Today the Australian wine community acknowledges the Jimmy Watson Trophy as one of the industries most prestigious awards, and the trophy is said to add at least one million dollars to the winning winemakers bottom line.
TASTING NOTES: Opaque black purple colour with purple crimson hue. Perfumed nose, reflecting the blend with aroma of violets, blackcurrant, spice, vanilla and dark chocolate. Mouthfilling flavours. Spice, blackpepper, plum, blackcurrant and vanilla. Excellent length. Fine dry tannins. Perfect balance. Exceptionally long aftertaste.
Cellar 4-5 years (2007-2008)
Alc/vol: 14.5%

Other reviews... Appealing array of red and black fruits, the oak restrained; supple and round, nicely balanced. Winner of the Jimmy Watson Trophy 2002. Tasted October 2003. 92 points - James Hallidays Wine Companion
