2002 Henschke Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc Merlot

The cool vintage conditions throughout 2002 resulted in poor fruit set which in turn lead to extremely low yields – Henschke reporting some yields being down by up to 80% in some varieties. However, the resulting lower yields produced what the Henschke’s described as ‘one of their most exceptional vintages ever’ with the warm dry Indian summer autumn period, providing sensational colours and flavours.

Made from a blend of 75% cabernet sauvignon, 12.5% cabernet franc and 12.5% merlot. A wine which delivers a real sense of style.  Very deep crimson colour with deep crimson hue.  Superb, refined nose of cedar, cassis, blackcurrant, mulberry and spice.  The palate has elegance and flavours, coupled with depth.  Cassis and mulberry flavours are overlaid with truffle and spice.  Fine grained tannins, perfect balance.  Very long aftertaste of mulberry, truffle and spice. Aged 18 months in French oak, the fabulous 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Cyril Henschke (a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, and equal parts Cabernet Franc and Merlot) is a blockbuster example of how well Bordeaux varietals can perform in the Barossa, in this case the cooler Eden Valley. Its dense purple colour is followed by an extraordinary nose of black currants, smoke, high class cigar tobacco, cedar, spice, and subtle sweet oak. Deep, full-bodied, and intense with a multilayered mouthfeel, an explosive finish, and moderately high tannin, this cuvee will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age, and should evolve for two decades or more.
