Glenkinchie Distillers Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

Lowland whiskies are generally used as background material for blends and have historically been unappreciated (or at least largely neglected) by malt enthusiasts. This expression breaks the mould. In its more familiar manifestation Glenkinchie is a lighter-bodied aperitif style. The Distiller’s Edition adds an extra dimension : Aged for 10 years in old Bourbon casks for weight and texture, the whisky is then finished in Amontillado Sherry casks from the Macharnudo district of Jerez. The result has absorbed some of the nutty character of the Sherry while also adding body. Its delicate sweetness will work with lighter-styled desserts. The nose offers soft stone fruits, then hints at nashi pear, muesli bar and later haystack / lucerne mulch. Middle weighted. Glides over the tongue with creamy, semi-sweet tea biscuit, light custard and vanilla bean flavours; finishes drier, highlighting hay, tangerine and later suggestions of nougat, cashew and hazelnut in the aftertaste. The delicate Lowland Lady gains some weight, and as far as wood finishes go, the balance is pretty spot on. 43% Alc./Vol.

...The amontillado gives a more rounded feel and greater profundity to the single malt. Peaches, apricots, almonds, and soft ginger on the nose, Smooth and balanced on the palate, gently spiced and nutty, with cherries, caramel, discreet sherry, and vanilla. The medium-length finish features vanilla and lingering, spicy Jaffa oranges, drying slowly to oak. 85 points - whiskyadvocate.com
