2003 Rockburn Pinot Noir
Why is Central Otago Pinot so good?
The big answer is terroir, the smaller answer is the right clonal mix. Central Otago is the worlds southern most grape growing region, located at 45° South – which is the same latitude as Ore gon’s Willamette Valley, po sitioned 45° North. Central Otago enjoys a narrow range of heat summation, 850- 1100 growing degree days, with large diurnal temperature shifts – these shifts are nec essary for maximum flavour development. Modern viticul tural activity began in 1972, with the first commercial re lease of Pinot Noir in 1987. Pinot Noir is highly suscep tible to botrytis, so long cool, dry autumns are necessary to keep the grapes in top condition, avoiding botrytis. The soils are well drained, with good minerality and low organic matter. However, the Central Otagoans maintain that the real secret behind great Pinot Noir is that there is not a traffic light within 200 km of Otago – a pristine pol lution free environment.
Rockburn takes its name from the rugged rock strewn burn seared landscape of Central Otago. A very impressive New Zealand Pinot. Deep crimson colour with deep mauve crimson hue. Lifted nose of spice and violets followed by cherry, strawberry and clove, showing strong varietal character. The palate has excellent weight and mouthfeel, with generous flavours of cherry, spice, liquorice and strawberry jam. Velvet tannins, perfect balance. Very long aftertaste of cherry, spice and strawberry.Cellar 3-4 years (2009-2010)
