Springbank's small batch policy has resulted in one thrilling bottling after another. On the downside are small outturns, which usually means their limited editions don't last long on the shelves. 1997 saw the first distillation of Hazelburn which is triple distilled and made entirely from unpeated, air dried barley. The initial release as an eight year old in 2005 was so successful that all 6,000 bottles sold out within a matter of weeks. Thankfully they've upped production (slightly) since then. Aged in Oloroso sherry casks for the full term of its 14 year maturation, this was bottled in February 2019 with an outturn of 9,900 bottles.

Tasting note: Deep bronze. A complex sniff that feels like the perfect combination of sherry and dark chocolate... a minute in the glass finds the Oloroso more salient; Peel heavy marmalade, semi-ripe blackberries, new leather, honey, a little cigar box... Viscous on entry, followed by a full bodied but balanced attack; Mid palate delivers a cascade of fruit cake, pepper, cocoa and orange zest. The finish turns chewy and finely tannic, dripping with Oloroso right through the aftertaste. Fabulous. Adding water accentuates dried fruits and fruit'n'nut chocolate. If you enjoy older Glendronachs or Glengoynes you will love this. A solid expression of an increasingly hard to find style that's really selling for a song. 49.3% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from Springbank... "Fruit and nut chocolate, raisins and almonds followed by summer fruits, dark chocolate and pecan pie."
