2004 Henschke Keyneton Estate Euphonium Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot

The Euphonium is a tribute to the pioneering musical families of the Barossa Valley, and in particular the Henschke Family Brass Band – now that’s an achievement! The original B flat euphonium has been restored and remains in the family. The drink named after the euphonium is comprised of a blend of 40% Shiraz, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc grown in the Barossa and Eden Valleys. Vintage conditions were similar to 2002 with good yields and excellent fruit quality. Winter rainfall was average, followed by a frost free, wet, warm and thundery spring. December was the hottest in 10 years, however, vintage was conducted under glorious sunny March days and cold dewy nights with fruit being harvested at near perfect conditions.

A delightful, very classy red

Deep crimson colour with deep crimson hue. Medium body. Perfumed nose of violet and cedar, followed by a hint of spice, vanilla and confectionary. The palate is both mouthfilling and elegant, showing excellent length and depth of flavour. Flavours of spice, mulberry, plum and vanilla with hints of leather and cedar on the back palate. Fine grained tannins. Very long aftertaste of mulberry, cedar, vanilla and pepper.

The 2004 Keyneton Estate “Euphonium” Shiraz is purple-colored with fragrant aromas of toast, black cherry, scorched earth, pencil lead, and blueberry. Tightly knit but well balanced, it will need 5-7 years in the cellar to unwind and reveal its full potential. At that point, my score will look conservative.
