2007 Domaine Wachau Gruner Veltliner
A superb, exotic drink, though most readers will be wondering "What is it?" Although Austria has been traditionally associated with Riesling, the country actually has significantly larger plantings of Gruner Veltliner (or 'Gru-Vee', as it has been dubbed). Like Riesling, the variety is capable of a range of expressions. Cropped at high yields, it results in a pleasant but light quaffing white, but with more careful viticulture, it can produce full, complex, spicy wines, often with distinctive white flower and ripe citrus edges to them. It’s recently become regarded as the centrepiece of Austria’s wine industry, where the domestic market snaps up the majority of the better examples, some of which have proved world class.
