Douglas Laing's Provenance label represent the entry level whiskies in their single cask portfolio. The higher tiers include the Old Particular and XOP (Xtra Old Particular) labels. Across the board, they offer Single Malt and Single Grain Whiskies from a wide selection of Scotland’s distilleries.
Each edition is bottled at 46% ABV or higher without colouring or chill-filtration. Rarely seen except as an independent bottling, Miltonduff (est. 1824) is a large operation, now under the ownership of Pernod Ricard. Much of the production is reserved for the Ballantine's blends. Six pot stills are employed, and two Lomond stills (originally used for the the lightly peated 'Mosstowie' whisky, reportedly no longer produced). Whiskies marketed as Miltonduff are unpeated. Typically a combination of American oak and x Sherry casks are used for maturation. Tasting note: Distilled in 2007 and drawn from a sherry butt. Deep gold. Shy but attractive aromas of herbal tea (chamomile?) developing fruit-cake-like notes, icing sugar and flourless orange cake over time. Delicate bittersweetness, repeats the notes from the aroma through the middle; finish ups the sweetness becoming sponge cake like, with hints of lemon lozenge. Concludes tangy, perfectly balanced with lingering malty/vanilla sweetness. Lovely Miltonduff. 46% Alc./Vol.
