2011 Domaine Grand Nicolet Cotes du Rhone
‘A fantastic entry level Cotes du Rhone that delivers impressive everyday drinking.’
The first hectare of vines was planted on the Domaine Grand Nicolet property in 1875. The winery was established in 1926 and further plantings of Grenache and Carignan were made, replacing cereal crops. The present owner, Jean Pierre Bertrand purchased the Estate in 1999 which has now expanded to 20 hectares (50 acres) of vines. Rhone super star Philippe Cambie acts as consultant.
Great Value!
Opaque black dark red colour with deep dark red hue. The nose exhibits ripe black raspberry and liquorice aromas over a background of incense and spice. Medium to full bodied the palate has generous almost succulent flavours of black raspberry and liquorice followed by some incense infusions and blackpepper. Fine grained balanced tannins impart some chewiness on the finish. Long liquorice, black raspberry and spicy blackpepper aftertaste.
Drink over the next 3-4 years (2017-2018).

Other Reviews…
A knockout Cotes du Rhone that does everything right, Bertrand’s 2011 Cotes du Rhone is comprised of 70% Grenache and equal parts Syrah, Mourvedre and Carignan. Aged 14 months in concrete tank, it offers up a terrific bouquet of ripe red and blackcurrants, saddle leather, spice-box and licorice to go with a full-bodied, voluptuous and textured feel on the palate. Buy this beauty by the case and enjoy it over the coming 2-4 years. Drink now-2017. Run by Jean-Pierre Bertrand, with consulting help from Philippe Cambie, this top-notch estate covers over 70 acres, mostly in Rasteau.
