A native of New Zealand PJ Charteris has over two decades of winemaking experience that includes stints with Lindemans, Penfolds, Paul Jaboulet in the Rhone and Adelsheim Vineyard in Oregon. But it was his 12 years at Brokenwood in the Hunter Valley where he earned his reputation as one of Australia’s leading winemakers. It was also here where PJ met his wife Christina and they realised their long held dream to establish their own wine label with the discovery of the Winter Vineyard, a top Pinot Noir site with the A-List address of Felton Road, Bannockburn in Central Otago. The first vintage was in 2008 but it wasn’t until 2011 when PJ decided to leave Brokenwood to give his full attention to Charteris. A blend of 2 vineyards, 75% Winter vineyard and 25% Hawkesbury vineyard the wine was matured in old French oak for 18 months.

Superb length & power are woven into a silky texture.

Semi translucent dark red colour with a light crimson brick red hue. Perfumed aromas of ripe dark cherries and strawberries are interlaced with a hint of anise and violet over a background of spicy cedar. Light to medium weight the palate has excellent richness in conjunction with a very supple mouthfeel that gives the wine great immediate drinking appeal. Generous flavours of ripe dark cherries and strawberries fill the mouth over some meaty anise like characters and lightly smoked spicy cedar. Satin like in texture with silky smooth tannins, it finishes very long with an aftertaste of ripe dark cherries, strawberries, a touch of anise, meaty characters and spicy cedar. Total production was only 288 dozen.
Delicious drinking over the next 4-5 years.
