2013 Wirra Wirra Woodhenge Shiraz
Woodhenge is the result of a fantasy exposed over a dinner at McLaren Vale’s Salopian Inn. Greg Trott, the late owner of Wirra Wirra wanted to build a post and rail fence on a cyclopean scale, using massive red gum timber sourced from the Flinders Ranges. It was Salopian Inn’s chef, Russell Jeavons who offered to construct the monument with pieces weighing as much as three tonnes!
Outstanding inky black purple colour showing great depth with a deep dark purple black tinged hue. Pronounced ripe blackberry and liquorice aromas are intermixed with dark plum and a touch of dark chocolate followed by smoky vanillin cedar and blackpepper. Medium to full bodied, rich, and velvety in its mouthfeel the palate features a generous flavour profile of ripe blackberries and liquorice over some subtle dark chocolate, vanillin cedar and blackpepper. Velvety but structural tannins. Long aftertaste of liquorice, ripe blackberries, dark plum, vanillin cedar and black pepper.
Cellar 5-6 years.
Alc 14.5%
Other Reviews….
Maturation in French and American oak of various sizes (35% new) for 17 months with rack and return every 4 months might seem a lot, but it's part of the standard procedure at Wirra Wirra, and you can't argue with the result, for this is of Stonehenge/Woodhenge dimensions. It is only because of the balance between its components that the wine can be enjoyed soonish, but it needs more than a decade to come into full flower. Drink By 2033.
