2014 Benanti Etna Rosso
Benanti is one of the reference points for wines produced from Sicily’s Mount Etna. Sourced from 40 year old bush vines utilising 80% Nerello Mascalese and 20% Nerello Cappuccio grapes with 8-10 months maturation in barriques, has resulted in a highly perfumed, effusively fruity wine. Semi translucent dark red colour with black tinged edges and brick red hue. Very fragrant the nose offers up aromatics of intermixed dried and dark cherries infused with fresh herbs followed by some earth, lightly scorched cedar and spice. There’s a sense of lightness to the wine with flavours of dried & dark cherries, and fresh herbs flowing effortlessly across the savoury palate. Underpinning it are some earthy scorched cedar and spice nuances. Dryish finish with slightly chewy tannins and bright acidity providing an excellent framework. Long aftertaste of dried cherries, dark cherries, fresh herb infusions, earth and spice. A good match with roast pork.
