2014 Katnook Estate Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon

Matured for 39 months in predominately French oak barriques (91%), of which 43% were new. Midnight black dark red colour with a dark red black hue. Potent ripe blackcurrant, liquorice and dark chocolate aromas sail out of the glass closely followed by vanillin notes, cigar box, scorched earth and spicy dried herbs. Rich, bold and fleshy the palate is awash with ripe blackcurrant and liquorice fruits which meld into dusty vanillin cedar, tobacco, dried herb and spice nuances. Excellent depth and power with sturdily built tannins that are quite velvety in their feel but slightly dryish towards the finish. Long, lavishly fruited aftertaste.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Machine-harvested, crushed and destemmed, 5-10 days on skins with cultured yeast, matured for 39 months in French and American oak (52% new). This has always been an iconic wine, and the bright crimson colour is a great start, quickly followed by beautifully pitched cassis/blackcurrant fruit and finely shaped tannins in perfect balance. There's not much to say about this wine, so perfect is the balance and mouthfeel. Drink by 2044.
