2014 Mount Mary Quintet
Mount Mary is one of Australia’s iconic small producers. Established in 1972 by Dr John Middleton their flagship Cabernet blend, Quintet, is the epitome of Bordeaux elegance. In recent years Dr Middleton’s grandson Sam has taken on the winemaker reigns with great success as can be clearly evidenced by this wine.
Opaque dark red black colour with a bright youthful purple red hue. Showing both finesse and excellent intensity alluring aromas of red and blackcurrants intermixed with mulberries drift out of the glass over a background of cedary tobacco characters, faint black olive and bay leaf with spice end notes. With all the hallmarks of Quintets elegance and refinement on display the palate has an understated richness with powerful flavours of red currant, blackcurrant and mulberries followed by some spicy cedar, light tobacco infusions and traces of bay leaf. Poised, beautifully integrated fine grained tannins. Concludes with a long aftertaste of red and black currant infused with mulberries, spicy cedar, light tobacco and hints of bay leaf. Will evolve superbly in the cellar over the next 8-10 years.

While there wasn't a lot of wine made in the Yarra Valley in '14 (wind and rain during flowering), some wine of very high quality was made - witness this. Mount Mary has shown over the decades that Quintet develops superbly, and this complex dark berry-flavoured Bordeaux blend will do just that. Drink by 2039.
