2014 The Whisky Cellar Private Cellars Selection Glenglassaugh 6 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Glenglassaugh used to be classified as a Speysider but officially falls within the Highland region, overlooking the crescent beach of Sandend Bay on the Moray Firth coast. Mineral rich water sourced from the Glassaugh Spring contributes to a sweet, ripe new make spirit while the salty North Sea wind permeates the maturation warehouses, some of which date back to the 1870s. The result is an individual 'coastal' Highlander. Probably the youngest Glenglassaugh ever released, this was drawn from a first fill ex-Oloroso quarter cask, so the outturn was just 148 bottles. Shy aromas hint at dried grass, Ovaltine and dark chocolate but it shows good balance for an uncut youngster with a crisp, vibrant, biscuity delivery trailed by nippy spices. Plum pudding fills out the warming finish. The sherry feels discreet. 58.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Notes from the bottler... Expect notes of plum jam, dark chocolate and strawberry tart with red peppercorns. A great structure and finish for such a young whisky. Rich chocolate and cranberries persist on the finish.
