2017 Domaine Les Aphillanthes 1921 Rasteau
A long time direct import, Domaine les Aphillanthes is located in the tiny village of Travaillan, just to the north of Châteauneuf du Pape, and is run by Daniel Boulle. Undeniably rich, chewy and powerful renown Rhone wine critic Jeb Dunnuck describes them as ‘some of the best Cotes du Rhones out there…’.
A blend of Grenache, Mourvedre and Carignan aged for 18 months in oak barrels. Midnight black dark red colour with a deep dark red hue. Pronounced liquorice top notes meld into black cherry, black raspberry, scorched earth, dried meat, subtle leather and blackpepper scents. Rich and powerful, the blockbuster palate is packed to the rafters with intensely concentrated black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits which are firmly backed by a ripe chewy tannin structure that gives the palate a robust feel. Elements of scorched earth, dried meats and an explosive burst of blackpepper fill out the back half. The long, muscular aftertaste laced with blackpepper and earth.
Cellar 5-6 years.
Alc. 14.5%
Other Reviews….
Showing similar to a barrel sample tasted with importer Peter Weygandt, the 2017 Rasteau Cuvée 1921 offers a brilliant bouquet of cassis and blueberries intermixed with notions of violets, graphite, and incense. With full-bodied richness, remarkable purity, and plenty of tannins, this serious Rasteau will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and cruise in cool cellar for a decade. This cuvée comes from 90-year-old vines and is a mix of 90% Grenache, 7% Mourvèdre, and 3% Carignan.
