2017 La Maschera Pinot Grigio
Veneto, Italy’s north-eastern region with Venice its capital, is home to the Pinot Grigio grape variety. Each year, since the 10th century, The Carnival of Venice is celebrated in the San Marco Square, with people dancing and feasting behind elaborate and exotic masks which is where this wine takes it’s name - La Maschera (the mask). Protected from the harsh northern European climate by the Alps, these cooler climes are somewhat similar to the coastal maritime regions of the Limestone Coast where the grapes for this wine were harvested.
Brilliant water like colour with a light greenish tinge around the outskirts. Scents of pears and ripe red apples gently laced with a hint of musk fills the nose followed by some subtle wet stone and spice. Nicely textured yet light, vibrant and incredibly flavoursome, pear and red apple characters dominate over traces of musk and citrusy mineral infusions. Finishes crisp and dry. Excellent length with a long aftertaste of pears, red apples, musk infusions and citrusy mineral characters.
Drink over the next 1-2 years.
