Renown as one of Heathcote’s leading growers and viticulturalists, Ian Rathjen also produces small parcels of wine under his own label, Whistling Eagle. Matured in a mix of French and American oak, the Eagles Blood Shiraz is his ultimate expression of the Cambrian terroir displaying spectacular colour, depth and power.
Matured in French oak (30% new) for a period of 18 months. Dense midnight black core with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Wafting from the glass are intense liquorice, blackberry and black cherry aromas which meld into vanillin cedar, subtle scorched earth and peppered fennel notes. Rich, concentrated and luxuriously textured the full bodied palate is awash with liquorice, blackberry and dark plum fruits which possess Heathcote’s trademark power and depth. Lightly smoked vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered earth characters ensue. Velvet smooth yet structured tannins with a long silken black fruited aftertaste.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.
Alc. 14.8%

Other Reviews….
The winemaker views this wine as the 'ultimate expression' of the ancient Cambrian soils of Heathcote. This captures the rust-coloured iron-oxide-rich soils and the brightness and mineral edge they can bring to shiraz. Built around a core of Heathcote black fruits and spice and supported by nicely restrained French and American oak, this is bold and generous. Ultra-ripe fruits mingle with savoury elements and sturdy tannins. This one is a keeper. Drink by 2034.
