The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot is showing beautifully from bottle, unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis, black plums, sweet soil tones and subtle spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's one of the more tightly wound wines in the range, with powdery structuring tannins, lively acids and a long, penetrating finish.

The 2018 Volnay Les Caillerets "Ancienne Cuvée Carnot" 1er Cru comes from Bouchard’s 3.7-hectare monopole. It expresses more delineation and detail than the Taillepieds, presenting a rather intoxicating mélange of red and black fruit laced with violet. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, good body and density and a firm backbone. It clams up a little toward the finish, and it will demand three or four years in bottle before it becomes approachable.

This is compositionally similar to the Taillepieds but even riper and with just a bit more spice elements. There is good intensity and minerality on the delicious middle weight flavors that also coat the palate on the youthfully austere and slightly warm finish that delivers fine length.
