2018 Domaine Louis Boillot Gevrey-Chambertin les Evocelles - DAMAGED LABEL
Louis Boillot in concert with his wife Ghislaine Barthod and their son Clément Boillot-Barthod manage a fabulous array of old-vine vineyards in both the Cotes de Nuits and Cotes de Beaune. Whilst this Burgundian ‘red-royalty’ family hold no Grand Cru vineyards they turn out some of the most beautiful red Burgundy along the Cote d’Or.

Here there is a particular kind of reduction that the Burgundians refer to as bourgeon de cassis, or black currant blossom; this kind of reduction tends to dissipate easily though it does dominate the fruit when it's present. The refined and highly energetic flavors possess a lovely mid-palate texture with plenty of minerality while exhibiting good persistence on the somewhat skinny and lean finish. This may well flesh out with a few years of bottle age and my predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt. Drink 2025+.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles is a touch more reserved, unwinding to reveal a brooding bouquet of cherries, berries, dark chocolate, grilled meats and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, lively and precise, it's concentrated and introverted, with powdery structuring tannins and a mineral finish.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles 1er Cru has a pretty bouquet of vivacious red currant, raspberry and crushed strawberry fruit, along with light rose petal notes and hints of quince and orange pith. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannins, and a keen thread of acidity lends real tension and precision toward the finish. This is one of Boillot’s best 2018s. Drink 2023-2038.
