David Lett had been pioneering cool climate Pinots in the Willamette Valley since the mid '60s, when he relocated as a viticulture and enology graduate from U.C.Davis. Lett brought with him cuttings of Wädenswil, the only Pinot clone certified as virus-free at the time by U.C. Davis, paving the way for Pinots in Oregon as this clone is naturally suited to cool, wet climate and crafts very distinctive reds with a bright fruit character as well as spice and floral notes.
Nowadays The Eyrie Vineyards is made up of 26 hectares (all certified organic and dry-farmed) across five sites all in the Dundee Hills AVA and is run by Lett's son, Jason. A distinguishing point of these wines is the elegance and ability to be long-lived in the cellar, gaining further complexity over the years, even decades.

Other Reviews....
Pale ruby, the 2018 Pinot Noir The Eyrie is a stunning wine with 10-15 years of aging potential. It has detailed scents of raspberries, blackberries, star anise, tangerine oil and violets, and it continues to unfold aromatically as it spends time in the glass. Delicately intense, it glides through the mouth like velvet, with seemingly endless flavor and nuance, and a finish that goes on and on. Drink: 2024-2039.

Vivid ruby-red. Pungent, mineral-accented red berry and cherry aromas are complemented by suggestions of five-spice powder, dark chocolate and candied flowers. Chewy and appealingly sweet, offering finely tuned black raspberry, cherry and violet pastille flavors sharpened by a smoky mineral flourish. Shows fine clarity and floral thrust on the energetic finish, which is framed by steadily building tannins. Drink: 2024-2034.

Aromas of spiced cherries, wild strawberries and dried herbs. Medium-bodied with creamy tannins. Concentrated and brooding on the palate. A dried-floral note comes through. Great intensity and length. Good aging potential. Best after 2023.
