2019 Castagna Genesis Syrah
Pitch black in colour at its core with a dark red hue. Intense spicy plum, violet, liquorice and clove aromas engulf the olfactory senses with some dried meat, scorched earth and peppered herb notes also chiming in. Rich and sleek across the medium bodied palate, spicy dark to black cherry, plum and liquorice fruits are complexed by notions of clove, smoky earth, vanillin cedar and peppered dried meats. Polished tannin structure with a long finish that’s refined and highly savoury. Very Northern Rhone like.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.
Alc. 14%
Other Reviews…..
Made with 98/2% shiraz/viognier. A compelling example of syrah, one that brings subtlety and restraint, giving full voice to the grape's aromatic side and innate beauty. Smell the lifted violet, acacia, briar, black cherry and spice. Quietly assumes a personality ripe in black cherries, bramble, cinnamon, allspice, woodsmoke and cured meats. Feel the tension playing out on the palate between tannin and acidity, tight and taut at this still-early stage, and oak (25% new) and fruit. Five years old and almost ready for its close-up. Drink by 2035.

Jeni Port - James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion
The finest syrah in Australia, if not the New World. At least if the measuring stick is the Northern Rhone. A warm year, but with no dearth of freshness, nor aromatic fireworks. Think violets, salumi, blueberries, crushed clove, mace and Chinese five spice. The tannins, a beautiful weave from fore to aft. A little more astringent, perhaps, than the finest vintages, but this biodynamically certified expression will age beautifully across the mid-term. Best after 2025.
