2019 Domaine Roche Cairanne
Since the 17th century, the Roche family history has been bound to Cairanne, one of the most notorious villages in the Southern Rhone. Romain Roche is now in charge of perpetuating the family philosophy and their "all in the vineyards" approach to their profession. The grapes for the Cairanne come from a selection of naturally low yielding Grenache and Syrah vines between 40 and 105 years of age, within two distinct terroirs. The Grenache grows on the red clays and "Galets" of the Guarrigues plateau, while the Syrah comes from the Marly slopes of "La Montagne" with a northern exposure. Also included is a portion of Carignan. Each block is fermented separately with only the Syrah component matured in barrels and demi-muids (600 litres) for a period of 10 months.
Impenetrable inky black heart with a very deep black dark red hue. Heady black cherry, morello cherry, blackberry and liquorice aromas sail through the nostrils followed by herbs du Provence, scorched earth and spicy leather notes. Rich dense black fruits saturate the thick, heavy palate. Flavours of black and morello cherries, black raspberry and liquorice are backed by a ripe muscular tannin structure which provides some grip to what is otherwise a very opulent mouth feel. Scorched earth, dried herb, leather and peppered meat elements also chime in. Superb power and concentration with a long hedonist finish.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.

Other Reviews….
Leading off the 2019s from bottle, the 2019 Cairanne is rich and textured, with lots of black fruits as well as pepper garrigue, leather, and spice aromas and flavors. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and loaded with fruit, it will keep for a decade. The blend is 65% Grenache, 25% Syrah, and 10% Carignan, with the Grenache brought up in tank and the Syrah in demi-muids. It’s unquestionably an outstanding wine. Drink 2022-2032.
