2019 Pio Cesare Langhe Nebbiolo DOC
Pio Cesare have been making wines in central Alba for 141 years from their vineyards based primarily in Barolo and Barbaresco. Today, fifth generation Federica Boffa with her cousin Cesare Benvenuto lead this prestigious estate, after the untimely passing of Pio Boffa in 2021 who for 40 years was the face of Pio Cesare.
Produced from a selection of Pio Cesare’s vineyards located in Barolo (La Morra and Serralunga), Barbaresco (San Rocco Seno D’Elvio) and Diano d’Alba. Aged for 30 months in French oak (20% barriques and 80% in casks of 20 to 50 hectolitres) for a period of 24 months.
Dark red in colour with black shaded edges and a light rusty red hue. Fragrant violet, red currant, red to dark cherry and subtle leather scents sail through the nostrils followed by some earthy dried herb and spice notes. Silky on entry, delicious red cherry, ripe red currant and earthy tobacco flavours are firmed up on the back half by a stern yet integrated tannin structure and energetic acidity. Dry spicy finish with some subtle leathery characters lingering on the elegant yet rustic aftertaste.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.
Alc. 14.5%
Other Reviews….
A firm and fine-tannined red with strawberries and some cedar. It’s medium-bodied with pretty tannins and a long, bright finish. Drink or hold.
