2019 Sons of Eden Romulus Old Vine Shiraz
Sons of Eden is a partnership between winemaker Corey Ryan and viticulturist Simon Cowham who both learnt their trades in the vineyards and cellars of Eden Valley. Their labels Romulus and Remus come from the fable of the legendary founders of Ancient Rome. These twins were abandoned at birth and reared by a she-wolf. Romulus murdered his twin Remus in a fit of rage over the naming of Rome, the city which both had built. Legend presents Romulus (Barossa Valley) as the stronger, more powerful of the brothers, while Remus (Eden Valley) was more refined, focussed and elegant.
Fruit was sourced from the Light Pass, Moppa and Menglers Hill sub regions of the Barossa Valley with vines aged between 60-80 years old. Maturation took place in French oak hogsheads of which 50% were new.
Impenetrable black as night heart with an equally deep dark red black hue. Wafting through the nostrils are potent scents of ripe blackberry, liquorice, dark plum and dark chocolate which marry into spicy vanillin oak, mocha and scorched earth notes. Lavishly rich and voluptuously textured, the palate is completely saturated with dark plum, liquorice and blackberry fruits. Nicely integrated toasty oak, dark chocolate, earthy mocha and spice characters ensue. Magnificent power, depth and volume finishing with velvet smooth tannins and an aftertaste that’s exceptionally long, deeply fruited and seductive. Outstanding.

Other Reviews….
This Barossa wine makes the perfect point of comparison with our Eden Valley Shiraz Best In Show. Both wines are a saturatedly dark, opaque black-red in colour, but in place of the racy, lifted fruits of the Eden Shiraz, this Barossa wine is weightier, sweeter, its fruits confit and pressed, and with notes of oil, camphor and leaf litter lending those fruits an intriguing chiaroscuro. On the palate, it is dense and almost shockingly flavoury, the flavour pattern mimicking the wine's aromatic complexities to compelling effect. Texturally, too, this is a far weightier wine, with splendidly rich, flavour-saturated tannins and an admirably soft, unconfected acid balance. Virtuoso, vanguard Barossa.
