2019 Sorrenberg Chardonnay
Sorrenberg is a 3-hectare vineyard in Beechworth, owned by Barry and Jan Morey. Surrounded by forest and bordered by Stony Creek, the site’s cool climate, granitic soil, and northern aspect provide ideal conditions for viticulture, ensuring full ripeness even for late-ripening varieties. Established in 1985, the vineyard focuses on Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Gamay, with smaller amounts of other varieties for their blends. The wines are crafted on-site using traditional methods, including fermentation in French barriques, with close attention to quality. Certified biodynamic since 2008, Sorrenberg emphasizes sustainable farming and low production to maintain exceptional standards.
The 2019 vintage began with a dry winter and spring, followed by heavy December rains that provided ample soil moisture for ripening. The result was flavorful, high-quality fruit with average yields. Expect aromas of white peach with subtle oak notes, complemented by bright acidity that enhances the palate and delivers a long, lingering finish.

Other Reviews….
Time for ye olde cliche of ‘needs little introduction’. My most recent visit (early 2020) to Sorrenberg gave me a little window into the wine’s future and I was pleased…
It’s a slightly more acid driven release from 2019 with licks of honey water and sweet lime juice as the main part of the conversation. From 2018 to 2019 we see, a less rich, less pulpy, less fleshy and less powerful release, though the same swoop of judicious oak seasoning, curls of nutty savouriness and a light, salty sparkle of minerally things through the finish are familiar. I like the freshness here, drinkability right now is off the charts, it spreads itself a little wider in the palate; perhaps its early appeal keeps it off a higher plain? It’s complex and layered as always – the fruit does this, there’s so much detail in each sip, and the finish is ultra long and fine. A masterclass with the variety again, with wonderful variation of another emphatic growing season. And that’s the way you do it. Drink 2021-2030.
