2020 Benjamin Leroux Volnay Les Santenots Premier Cru

The 2020 Volnay Santenots 1er Cru was one of the earliest ripening in this vintage. Precocious black cherries and a touch of kirsch on the nose, the palate is sweet and chewy, candied red fruit laced with orange peel with an almost Gamay-like on the finish (there’s none in here of course.) That’s probably because of the very small berries (375kg equated to one barrel). Drink 2026-2040.

Glorious glowing purple colour and the nose is beautifully balanced too, picked at the right time (i.e. first!) Gorgeous full red fruit with some blood orange, very juicy, excellent balance with the tannins, the clay soil contributing to the powerfully long aftertaste.
