2020 Domaine Charvin Le Poutet Cotes du Rhone
Run by Laurent Charvin this small family estate has vineyard holdings of 8 hectares in Chateauneuf du Pape and 13 hectares in Cotes du Rhone. Certified organic the average age of the vines is over 50 years old. These Grenache based wines follow traditional winemaking techniques with no de-stemming and all aging takes place in cement takes. Charvin’s Côtes du Rhône is regularly rated as one of the very best from this area and perhaps it is not surprising as the vines for this cuvee border directly on to the appellation for Chateauneuf du Pape in the northern sector where they are located.
The 2020 is an interesting contrast in style to the rich, powerful 2019 vintage being brighter and fresher with more red fruits.
Flooded with delicious red to dark fruits, this delicious Cotes du Rhone is rich and polished yet also remarkably fresh with a muscular edge.
A blend of 81% Grenache, 7% Syrah, 7% Mourvedre and 5% Carignan raised in concrete vats for 18 months. Deep dark red colour with black shaded edges and a bright dark red hue. Sailing out of the glass are delightful red raspberry, liquorice and ripe cherry scents which mix in with Provincial herb, subtle incense and peppered earth notes. Rich and polished yet also remarkably fresh, the palate is flooded with delicious spicy red to dark raspberry, liquorice and dark cherry fruits. Slightly chalky tannins impart a muscular feel with fresh provincial herb infusions, incense and scorched earth elements lying underneath. Peppery, slightly grippy finish with a long delicious red to dark fruited aftertaste.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.
