A blend of 80% Grenache (planted in 1948) and 20% Mourvèdre (planted in 1977) fermented on skins for 7 weeks before ageing in large old 50 hl foudres for 12 months.
Totally opaque black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Soaring out of the glass are alluring aromatics of black cherry and black raspberry infused with a mix of liquorice and pepper notes. Scorched earth, dried herb and spicy dried meat notes ensue. Exceptionally rich and powerful the palate is flooded with lavish black cherry, liquorice and black raspberry fruits which are backed by a robust tannin structure. Infusions of incense, scorched earth, provincial herb and peppered meat characters add complexity to the back half. Finishes firm and chewy yet with an overwhelming opulence to the very long and deeply fruited aftertaste.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.
Alc. 15%

Other Reviews….
The 2020 Gigondas Les Souteyrades is also utterly brilliant. Giving up lots of kirsch liqueur, orange blossom, ground pepper, and herbes de Provence-like aromatics, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness and a layered, seamless, elegant mouthfeel that has awesome tannins as well as purity of fruit. It's another sensational Gigondas to enjoy over the coming two decades. Drink 2023-2043.
