Orphan Bank is testament to Langmeil’s commitment to preserving old and rare Barossa vineyards. Ten rows of Shiraz planted pre-1860 were saved from the developer’s bulldozer and replanted alongside the original Langmeil vineyard on the banks of the North Para River. Thus these ten rows were named the “Orphans”, but after 150 years they had a new home.
A blend of 98% Shiraz and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon matured in French oak hogsheads (50% new) for a period of 25 months. Midnight black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Heady dark plum, liquorice and blackberry aromas waft out of the glass with tremendous intensity followed by mocha, vanillin oak and spicy fennel notes. Rich, voluptuous and full in body, the palate is drenched in waves of succulent dark plum, liquorice and blackberry fruit. Vanillin oak, earthy mocha, fennel and spice characters lie underneath. Boasting outstanding concentration and power it has cashmere like tannins which linger through the long, opulent and silky finish.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.
