2020 Vollenweider Wolfer Riesling
Daniel Vollenwieder was part of a pioneering movement of winemakers who returned to Mosel in the early 2000’s, rejuvenating abandoned vineyards. These are some of the oldest ungrafted Riesling vines in the world. The steepness of the vineyards is something to marvel, but they’ve still managed to convert the vineyards to organic practises, recently being certified. Fruit for this wine comes from the best plots in the Goldgrube.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a glimmer of green around the edges and a watery hue. Aromas of lime, spiced pear and red apple intermix with hints of honeysuckle and orange blossom. Light weight and possessing a river stone like mouth feel, flavours of lime, pear and green apple are dispersed across the palate with traces of mandarin and wet slate lingering through the back half. Finishes dry with crisp, tangy acidity and an elegant, highly energised aftertaste.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.
Alc. 12%
Other Reviews…..
Stacks of white peaches, spring blossoms and a hint of fresh ginger pour from the glass of this well-proportioned, medium-bodied dry riesling. Zesty grapefruit at the finish including a touch of pith bitterness adding character. Drink or hold.
