2021 Catena Alta Historic Rows Malbec
Textbook Argentina Malbec that features a gorgeous combination of juicy rich fruit and a fresh feel.
Nicola Catena planted his first Malbec vineyard in Mendoza in 1902 and today the estate is run by Nicholás Catena and his daughter Laura. Malbec continues to be the estate's focus and the winery's pristine vineyards lie at the base of the Andes on soils of sand, lime and stone at altitudes between 920 and 1120 metres above sea level. Over the last 20 years, the fastidious vineyard work of Nicholas and Laura has paid dividends and Catena Zapata is now one of Argentina's most famous estates.
Impenetrable inky black dark purple colour with a bright dark purple hue. Captivating aromas of violet, blueberry, plum and red liquorice fly out of the glass complimented by some cassis, vanillin cedar, light earth and spicy dried herb notes. Juicy ripe blueberry, plum, dark cherry and liquorice fruits caress the mid weighted palate which is beautifully framed by fine grained tannins and a delightful freshness. Spicy vanillin cedar, dried herb and spice elements extend across the back half. Energetically youthful it has a long refined finish that’s layered with moreish blue fruit.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Other Reviews……
The 2021 Malbec Catena Alta comprises 70% sourced from Gualtallary in the Uco Valley and the remaining portion from Luján and Maipú. Aged for up to 18 months in French oak barrels, both new and used, this purple wine reveals aromas of plums and cherries alongside hints of lavender and violets, all atop a subtle cedar layer. Dry and juicy, the supple and velvety tannins are complemented by a nimble flow, resulting in a mildly structured red with a flavorful, lasting finish. If there is a key in Mendoza Malbec, meaning piecing together terroirs to enhance complexity, this bottle might be the example. Drink 2024-2038.
