2021 Comando G El Reventon Garnacha

It’s time to leave your preconceptions at the door, as Comando G produce Garnacha (Grenache) unlike anyone else in Spain. Comando G’s Daniel Landi and Fernando Garcia craft Garnacha up in the near inaccessible hills of the Sierra de Gredos mountains which are miles away (figuratively and literally) from the dark, powerful, brooding wines of Priorat that hit the scene 20 years or so ago. These are a different breed of Garnacha, light, ethereal, built on tension and finesse. There’s no lack of concentration however, and they have much more in common with high-end Burgundy than what you would normally associate with Spain. Word is well and truly out on these special wines, with demand far outstripping supply and prices skyrocketing on the secondary market.

The 2021 El Reventón is the one wine from the village of Cebreros on slate soils, and it has an herbal and peppery twist similar to the notes I found in the Las Iruelas from this very cold year. This has some more meaty notes, more iron, but no heat or Mediterranean grapes. It's a narrower, more mineral expression of El Reventón, very balanced with an unnoticeable 15% alcohol, which meant full development of aromas and flavors in the grapes that were infused into the wine. This has to be the most elegant and precise year of El Reventón to date. In this cold vintage, it's ethereal, a little wider but getting close to the style of Las Iruelas. It's a little less expressive on the nose than Iruelas, with a little more fruit. 2022 will be the last vintage for this wine, as they sold the vineyard to the Alejandro Vigil and Catena team from Mendoza, who vinified it for the first time in 2023. 1,759 bottles were filled in March 2023. Drink 2024-2031.

Superbly knit nose despite the pungent white pepper character here. Lots of fruit, too, with wild berries, roasted grapefruit, agave and stones. Really firm and ample on the palate with impressive length and a little more roundness, too. Drink now or hold.
