2021 Jim Barry Assyrtiko
Jim Barry’s love affair with the Assyrtiko began in 2006 whilst on holiday on the Greek Island of Santorini, the birthplace of the variety. Its crisp acidity reminded him of Clare Valley Riesling yet it had a unique flavour profile that he had not experienced before. Intrigued, he began the process of importing cuttings and by 2012 had planted Australia’s first Assyrtiko vineyard.
Brilliant water like colour with a very faint tinge of green to the edges. Intense pear, lime and green apple scents drift from the glass followed by fresh herb and slatey mineral notes. Zingy lime and green apple fruits infused with fresh herbs are underpinned by crunchy acidity. Some distinct flinty mineral elements lingering on the back half. Finishes dry, taut and crisp with a long, racy saline infused aftertaste.
Drink over the next 2-3 years.
Alc. 12%
Other Reviews....
This Jim Barry Assyrtiko has brought the hitherto unpronouncable variety [ah-ser-teeko] to dinner tables around the country, for which we say thank you. It is perfectly poised for our climate and food, giving an array of nashi pears, green apples, briny acidity and a pleasant, sun-drenched hay vibe that most of us can only imagine. Delicious and uncomplicated. Drink it in the short term for maximum freshness. Drink by 2024.
