2021 Leconfield Coonawarra Cabernet Franc
A softer, more perfumed and approachable style earlier on that it’s Cabernet Sauvignon cousin, English wine writer Jancis Robinson aptly describes Cabernet Franc as the feminine side of Cabernet Sauvignon. Normally blended with other Cabernet varieties Leconfield is one of the few Australia producers to make a straight Cabernet Franc, the 2021 vintage in Coonawarra possessing all the hallmarks of an incredible vintage, with perfect conditions delivering fruit of outstanding quality.
From a great Coonawarra vintage, this superb example of Cabernet Franc has a Bordeaux like quality to it.
Produced from vines planted in 1982, this single vineyard wine was matured in a mixture of 1-6 year old French and American oak hogsheads for a period of 15 months. Midnight black dark red in colour with a bright dark red hue. Delightful red currant, violet and red cherry scents entrance the olfactory senses with cedary tobacco, earth, bay leaf and spice notes adding complexity. Medium bodied and possessing a refined feel the palate is well endowed with rich red currant, red cherry and mulberry fruits which overlay a back drop of spicy cedar, tobacco, earth and infusions of bay leaf. Fine grained tannins are complimented by beautifully balanced acidity which lends a touch of freshness. The aftertaste long, elegant and layered with delicious red fruits.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.
