2021 Merricks Estate Chardonnay
Merricks Estate was one of the first commercial vineyards on the Mornington Peninsula being planted in 1978. Seeking additional complexity the Merricks Estate Chardonnay is produced from two parcels of fruit that are picked on different dates and fermented separately before being blended together. The first batch was picked 10 days earlier, fermented with wild yeast and went through its malo naturally. The second batch was picked at a higher sugar levels and the juice had skin contact before being inoculated with yeast and subsequently induced Malo. Oak treatment was the same for both batches.
Juxtaposing the old with the new, this is a rich, opulent style of Chardonnay framed by fresh acidity.
Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Nosing offers up an intense aromatic profile of white peach, ripe nectarine and creme brulee scents which intermingle with hints of honeycomb, subtle butterscotch and spice. Rich, creamy and generously weighed the palate is awash with opulent ripe peach, honeycomb and crème brulee flavours. Some butterscotch, cashew and spicy nougat characters adding a background complexity. Finishes with good freshness and a long silky textured aftertaste.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.
