Atze's Corner is owned by sixth generation Barossa Valley vigneron, Andrew Kalleske. At the heart of the project are low-yielding 1912 and 1951 Barossa Valley Shiraz vines planted adjacent to the locally-known Atze's Corner, in an unassuming plot of land to the east of Nuriootpa on the valley floor. Fruit is also sourced from several other vineyards, also owned by the Kalleske family. Two of the Barossa Valley's prized sub regions make up 100% of the Shiraz in this wine - Ebenezer and Koonunga. Open, small-batch fermentation, hand plunging and pumping and minimal filtering and fining define Andrew's unobtrusive approach. Maturation takes place in a combination of new French oak (20%) with the balance in seasoned French and American oak for a period of 22 months.
Impenetrable inky black heart with a dense dark red black hue. Pronounced dark plum, liquorice and black cherry aromas are followed by some dusty vanillin cedar and peppered fennel notes. Rich and concentrated, plush dark plum, liquorice and black cherry fruits are framed by sturdy tannins. Toasty vanillin oak, subtle earthy mocha and pepper characters lie beneath. Robust feel finishing long and chewy.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.
