Coming Soon - 2022 By Farr RP Cote Vineyard Pinot Noir
The initials RP stand for Robyn Pamela, Nick Farr’s mum and matriarch of the Farr family. The fruit for this wine is sourced from the Côte Vineyard, it’s a close-planted parcel on an exposed slope, with hillsides facing north, northeast and east comprising of the most suitable clones, rootstocks, trellising and management you’ll find on the Farr’s landscape. Fruit is handpicked and sorted in the vineyard, then fermented in an open-top fermenter. Between 40 to 50% of the fruit will be destemmed and then cold soaked for four days. Maturation takes place in 50 to 60% new Allier French oak barrels for 18 months.
Other Reviews....
This wine was grown on Farr’s Cote Vineyard. RP refers to Robyn Pamela who, according to the Farr website, “has been in the vineyard and planted the first vines, driven the tractors, filled barrels and pigeaged at midnight. If we are ever a man down Robyn has always been the first one we have called to fill the void no matter the job, no matter the time of day. You can always count on mum.”
This wine is so inherently Farr, and so inherently Pinot Noir, and so inherently Geelong. It’s cherried and spicy, dry and structured, but it’s also ripped with earth, beet, rhubarb and something akin to potpourri-dipped-in-tonic water. It’s more savoury than sweet and yet it’s ripe. Smoked cedar notes are apparent but they are so well meshed with the fruit that you start to second guess whether they’re there at all. All told, this is a beautiful wine, of character. Drink 2027 - 2033+.
