2022 Chalk Hill Small Batch Release Barbera
Deep black dark purple core with a dark purple hue. Nosing offers up a mix of plum, liquorice and blueberry scents followed by some scorched earth and peppered herb like notes. Juicy liquorice, plum and blueberry fruits are underscored by lively acidity which imparts a fresh, energetic feel. Some inky earth and delicate herb elements are also evident. Slightly dryish tannins with a fresh juicy finish.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.
Alc. 14%
Other Reviews…..
Chalk Hill is an early adopter and ardent promoter of the grape, and it’s not hard to see the attraction. Barbera relentlessly clutches onto its acidity while still building flavour, presenting a challenge in some climes, but it positively soars in others. This hits a neat spot of that vigorous drive, flanked with blackberry pastille, redcurrant, sour black cherry, salted licorice and tar, and all so vigorously rendered. Zippy, bright and flavourful – it’s a fine rendition. Drink by 2027.
