2022 Clos Clare Watervale Riesling
Third generation winemakers Tom and Sam Barry of Jim Barry fame run the Clos Clare operation. This is their fifteenth vintage from Clos Clare's Riesling patch of 52 year old dry grown vines which adjoins the historic Jim Barry 'Florita' vineyard in Watervale.
Brilliant water like colour with a faint glimmer of green around the edges. Potent lemon and lime scents leap out of the glass followed by orange rind, Granny Smith apple, talc and steely mineral notes. Underscored by searing acidity the tightly coiled palate is adorned with lemon, lime and Granny Smith apple fruits that show great power. Notions of wet steel, chalky talc and flinty mineral characters also chime in. Tense, structured feel with a dry crunchy finish. The long snappy aftertaste delivered with laser like precision.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Particularly good intensity to be found in the 2022 Clare Valley Rieslings.
Lime, pink grapefruit, bath salts, a little spice, thyme and generally good waft of perfume. It’s intense, with a grapefruit pith and gin and tonic flavour, lime/lemon sorbet, a stony chalky feel, clean acidity, excellent length, with a pleasing quinine and lime zest tang to close. Classic Watervale. A terrific vintage for this wine. Drink 2022-2034+

Intensity and concentration seem to be the calling cards of 2022 Clare Valley riesling, and here's a case in point. Huge energy and velocity, this is tightly wound and racy with a filigree of lime, green apple, grapefruit, ginger, talc and green herbs oscillating between the bouquet and palate. Texture is gently chalky and mouth-watering, extending exceptionally long while keeping all that structure and architecture of fruit, herbal detail and minerality in a very compact frame. Above all, it's an incredibly refreshing and lively thing to drink. Yes, thanks. Drink by 2040.
