2022 Domaine Charles Audoin Gevrey-Chambertin
Domaine Charles Audoin was formed in 1972 by Charles and his oenologist wife Marie-Francoise, starting with three hectares in Marsannay. Their holding has now grown to around 14 hectares that captures some of the best parcels in Marsannay. Their son Cyril joined his father in 2000, and is now in charge of both vineyard and winemaking activities for the Domaine. Cyril is increasingly focused on vineyard health, to deliver wines with pure varietal expression and a sense of place. They are among the most serious wines from the area, and while juicy and approachable young, have the capacity to age gracefully for many years.
Deep dark red core with black shaded edges and a bright red hue. Sailing through the nostrils are dark to black cherry, anise and strawberry scents which are complimented by subtle scorched earth, dried herb and spicy cedar notes. Rich dark to black cherry, anise and strawberry flavours unfold across the palate with terrific power and intensity. Supple yet sturdy in its feel with grainy tannins providing underlying muscle. Infusions of dried herbs, earth and spicy cedar ensue. Deeply fruited it concludes long and expansive. Serious Burgundy structure here.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Other Reviews....
Ripe, generous and supple, this has a touch of earthiness and a moderately dry finish, like many wines of the appellation. A very good example, but not spectacular.

A slightly riper nose freely offers up notes of purple fruit, especially plum, along with hints of earth, the sauvage and underbrush. There is again excellent vibrancy to the detailed and attractively textured flavors that display fine length on the mildly austere finale. This too could use better depth but a few years of cellaring should certainly help. Drink through 2029+.
