2022 Domaine Sylvain Cathiard Nuits Saint George Aux Murgers Premier Cru
Sylvain Cathiard built a fearsome reputation through the 1990's and early 2000's for producing some of the greatest wines of Burgundy. His ability to marry fragrant and perfectly ripe grapes with expertly chosen new oak set the standard at the time. While the wines were more approachable than his peers, they also had the requisite components to age and evolve gloriously for many years. Now under the stewardship of his son Sebastien, the wines have gained even more acclaim and are equally as well built for an envious evolution in the cellar.
Other Reviews....
A more deeply pitched nose displays notes of ripe purple fruit, earth and a hint of the sauvage along with crushed fennel. There is better volume, richness and power though not the same refinement and minerality on the broad-shouldered flavors that deliver excellent length on the firmer and youthfully austere finale that flirts with rusticity. Patience absolutely necessary. Drink through 2034+.

Allen Meadows - Burghound
More mineral and vibrant than the Thorey, the 2022 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers reveals aromas of sweet red berries, plums, orange zest and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy palate underpinned by a powdery chassis of tannin that gently asserts itself on the finish.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 19, 2024)
The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Murgers 1er Cru is actually similar to the Aux Thorey on the nose: quite pixelated with vivacious, mineral-rich red fruit exuding transparency. The palate is well-structured and concentrated, with richer black fruit and firm grip. There’s a touch of Asian spice towards the muscular finish (perhaps due to the small berries) - this is a long-term proposition. Fabulous. Drink 2027-2048.

Five new barrels in nine. A lively purple colour. The bouquet shows some of the headier qualities of Vosne-Romanée allied to the ballast of Nuits-St-Georges. No black fruit notes in this wine, purely concentrated red berries backed by both acidity and tannins, leading to a fine long finish. Very satisfactory. Drink from 2030-2037.
