2022 Domaine Sylvain Cathiard Vosne-Romanee

Sylvain Cathiard built a fearsome reputation through the 1990's and early 2000's for producing some of the greatest wines of Burgundy. His ability to marry fragrant and perfectly ripe grapes with expertly chosen new oak set the standard at the time. While the wines were more approachable than his peers, they also had the requisite components to age and evolve gloriously for many years. Now under the stewardship of his son Sebastien, the wines have gained even more acclaim and are equally as well built for an envious evolution in the cellar.

A very Vosne-like nose is comprised by notes of plum, violet, exotic spice and a whiff of jasmine tea. The caressing and seductively textured medium weight flavors tighten up on the dusty, firm and balanced finish that is already quite complex. Even so, this is sufficiently structured to need at least 5 years of keeping before it will be reasonably approachable. Drink through 2030+.

Cathiard's 2022 Vosne-Romanée is lovely, wafting from the glass with aromas of wild berries, plums, spices, orange zest and peony. Medium to full-bodied, ample and seamless, it's more enveloping than the firmer, more overtly tannic Nuits-Saint-Georges, concluding with a perfumed finish.

The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Village has a sensual bouquet with pure redcurrant and crushed strawberry fruit, just a touch of violet popping up with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and well-balanced with rounded tannins. It’s a succulent Vosne-Romanée with a good body and a sustained finish. Recommended. Drink 2026-2040.

A fresh bright ruby purple. The bouquet is exquisite, fine, precise yet with a generosity of fruit beneath. Raspberry with a touch of cherry. This is spot on, less evidently seductive than a Sylvain Cathiard wine would have been at the same stage, but an excellent example of what Sébastien can achieve. The quality is in the length. Super fresh finish, a fine boned acidity giving the tension. Drink from 2028-2035.
